There is a pattern I have seen play out with every major technology shift: the early adopters get excited, the skeptics call it overhyped, and by the time mainstream organizations start paying attention, the early movers already have a two-year head start. Agentic AI is following the same arc. The difference this time is that the window for catching up is shorter than it looks.

Agentic AI refers to AI systems that do not just respond to prompts. They plan, set sub-goals, call tools and APIs, loop back and adjust when something does not work, and execute multi-step workflows with minimal human intervention. The shift from “assistant that answers questions” to “agent that completes tasks” sounds incremental. It is not. It changes the fundamental relationship between software and the humans who deploy it.

Gartner named agentic AI its top strategic technology trend for 2025. That is a significant call from an analyst firm that does not typically get ahead of itself. Deloitte projected that by the end of 2025, a quarter of enterprises using generative AI would have autonomous agents in production, doubling to fifty percent by 2027. McKinsey data shows regular generative AI use rising from sixty-five to seventy-one percent across business functions in a single year. The trajectory is not theoretical.

What makes this different

The previous generation of AI tools worked on a request-response model. You gave an input, you got an output, and a human reviewed the result before anything happened. Agentic systems operate differently. They receive a goal and then autonomously determine how to reach it, using whatever tools and data sources they have been given access to. They can write and execute code, query databases, send emails, fill in forms, and coordinate with other AI agents running in the same workflow.

Every major platform vendor made significant moves in 2025. OpenAI launched Operator. AWS Bedrock now supports multi-agent orchestration natively. Google introduced Agent Builder. Microsoft’s Copilot Studio allows organizations to build and deploy agents across the M365 ecosystem without deep engineering resources. The tooling is maturing fast, and the barrier to deployment has dropped considerably. For CIOs who have been waiting for the technology to stabilize before engaging, that moment has largely arrived.

The governance question nobody wants to answer

Here is the part that should keep technology leaders awake at night. When an AI agent makes a decision and that decision causes a problem, who is accountable? The user who approved the deployment? The vendor who built the model? The platform team that configured the tool access? Most organizations do not have a clear answer, and most enterprise governance frameworks were not designed with autonomous AI action in mind.

Accenture projects that by 2030, AI agents will be the primary users of most internal enterprise digital systems. Think about that for a moment. The main consumers of your ERP, your HR platform, your supply chain system may not be human employees. That is a governance, security, and architecture challenge of a completely different order than anything most IT organizations have planned for.

The CIO action plan here is not complicated, but it requires discipline. Start internal: deploy agents on workflows where the stakes are low and the audit trail is clear. Define ownership of outcomes before go-live. Embed human review checkpoints at decision nodes that carry material risk. Demand transparency from vendors on how their agents log activity and surface errors. And treat every agent deployment as a governed software release, not a SaaS subscription someone signed up for with a credit card. The organizations that build agent governance frameworks now, before the complexity scales, will have a significant advantage over those who deploy first and govern later.
